Lyme in the News

There is so much going on right now in the news about Lyme Disease.  It seems as though each week there is another famous person sharing their battle with the disease, another viral infection found in ticks or legislation that hits the headlines.

I thought I'd highlight some of the key happenings and rather than reinvent the wheel I'll share with you some great links where you can follow-up and get more information

1.  The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) is planning on readdressing it's guidelines regarding Lyme testing, diagnosis and treatment.   This would be wonderful news in the Lyme community but they are approaching their review in a completely biased way.  The IDSA is not allowing physicians, scientists, or anyone else who has experience with testing or treating chronic Lyme Disease to be a part of this panel.   The CDC admitted this past year that their statistics were wrong regarding the number of Lyme Disease cases and states that as many as 300,000 people are infected each year with Lyme Disease.  They are only including new infections and completely missing those with chronic infections and those who are misdiagnosed.  Find more information regarding this controversy at Lyme Disease.org  and Why We Protest The IDSA

2.  New:  The Powassan Virus which is also transmitted by ticks is a viral infection and is being reported in Connecticut.  Doctors are stating that this disease is much worse than Lyme Disease and that because it's viral there aren't any treatments for it.  Symptoms are siezures, stiff neck and high fever which comes on suddenly.  Reported on CBSNEWS.com

3.  The May Day 2015 Project will commence April 29 - May 1, 2015.  There will be a protest in front of the IDSA on April 30th and May 1st, 2015.  Head on over to The May Day Project for more information.

4.  Lyme Disease is confirmed in the southern states.  Most of us Lymies already knew this because of the many connections we make online.  I'm glad to see it's finally being recognized.  I believe their statistics are rather low but the truth will reported in time.  Find more information at ProHealth.

5.  Avril Lavigne reveals that she has been suffering from chronic Lyme Disease for the past year.  Her doctors could not identify what was causing her symptoms.  She became bedridden and unable to perform.  She states she's now 80% better.  You can find more of her story on the PEOPLE.com.

6.  The Take A Bite Out of Lyme Campaign Continues.  This campaign to raise awareness for Chronic Lyme Disease started out rather slow.  Rather than limit this campaign for one month the campaign will run for awhile longer.  If you haven't shown your support yet get all the details at the official Lyme Disease Challenge Website.  Don't forget to show your support!

Stay tuned for more information about how you can be protected agains vector-borne diseases.
As the warm weather graces us with sunshine and gentle breezes we expose ourselves, our children and our pets to insects and ticks that carry deadly bacteria.  Lyme is never the only infection one can get.  Be educated, be careful and have a plan.
